Upgrading the Acer Aspire A5750 laptop HDD to SSD : from 90 seconds to 2 secs boot to login screen (Win 10)

Laptop Bought in June 2012

Acer Aspire 5750 15.6 inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i3-2350M 2.3GHz, RAM 4GB, HDD 500GB, DVD-Super Multi DL, LAN, WLAN, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium

upgraded to Windows 8 then Windows 10 Home

Reviewing Task Manager performance was always limited by HDD at 100%
Was barely useable, with lots of waiting

Boot to login screen Windows 10 with existing HDD = >90 seconds

Crucial MX500 500GB SATA
Specs: 500GB 2.5-inch internal SSD • SATA 6.0Gb/s • 560 MB/s Read, 510 MB/s Write

CTSATAUSBCABLE.001 Crucial Easy Laptop Data Transfer Cable for SSD £7.99

CT11308081 Crucial MX500 500GB SATA 2.5-inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD £88.99

Software for cloning is downloaded from web (https://www.acronis.com/en-gb/promotion/CrucialHD-download/)

Procedure (simplified here, but also http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/ssd-upgrade-advisor)

I just cloned as is and kept the sizing the same 500GB and partitions as is.

  • backup your files (in case it all goes wrong)
  • Download Acronis on laptop drive to be cloned
  • Plugin new drive SSD to usb
  • Clone drive (took over 3 hrs for me for 150GB data)
  • Shutdown laptop, remove battery, hit power button
  • remove HDD
  • remove screws and casing
  • transfer SSD into case (didnt need spacer as it has screws)
  • refit
  • reboot and hope

Boot to login screen Windows 10 with new SSD = 2 seconds (!)

Despite an i3 and limited RAM (4GB) the machine is transformed into a useable windows 10 machine.

For £100 its a no brainer if you have one of these machines and you dont want a full replacement.
